Get to know Saxony-Anhalt

In a nutshell The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt is located in the heart of Germany and borders on Lower Saxony in the west, Brandenburg in the east and Saxony and Thuringia in the southeast and southwest. Saxony-Anhalt has an area of over 20,000 km² and a population of approx. 2.3 million. Its two major cities are the state capital of Magdeburg and the city of Halle (Saale). Another major centre is the independent town of Dessau-Roßlau.

Industry and science Particular growth drivers in Saxony-Anhalt are the traditional chemical industry, the food industry and the automotive suppliers, whose production facilities are among the most modern of their kind in the world. Together with Saxony, the Halle-Leipzig region is developing into a centre for biotechnology and genetic engineering. In addition, Saxony-Anhalt has a modern information and communication technology industry with many start-up companies.

Landscape The landscape is very varied. From the Altmark in the north, the state stretches over the Magdeburger Börde and the Harz low mountain range to the Thuringian foothills. Two thirds of Saxony-Anhalt’s are is used for agriculture. The black soils of the Magdeburger Börde are particularly fertile. The soil quality of this region is one of the best in Germany. This is a good basis for agriculture in Saxony-Anhalt and for the food processing industry.

Other interesting facts Second only to Bavaria, Saxony-Anhalt has the most UNESCO World Heritage sites in Germany – the Bauhaus, the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom, the Luther memorials in Eisleben and Wittenberg and the old town of Quedlinburg – as well as a diverse landscape of castles, palaces and churches. With several universities and research institutes, Halle and Magdeburg are scientific centres.
