Types of residence permits

Residence for the purpose of in-company vocational training and further vocational training (Section 16a of the Residence Act (AufenthG))

Unlike the other tracks for skilled worker immigration, consent will continue to be granted with priority review or will be determined by the Employment Regulation and by intergovernmental agreements.

The residence permit can be issued before the start of training for participation in a job-related language course. Advance approval from the BA (LINK) is required as well as a confirmation of participation for job-related German language training.

A change of purpose is possible for qualified vocational training, employment as a research assistant, employment with pronounced practical professional knowledge in accordance with Section 19c (2) of the Residence Act (AufenthG).

In the case of qualified vocational training, proof of sufficient German language skills (B1) is required if the language skills required for the specific qualified vocational training have not been examined by the educational institution, nor are to be acquired through a preparatory German language course.
