Non-discriminatory language

A sensitive approach is one of the most important factors in counselling and supporting immigrant professionals. Often immigrants have already experienced discrimination because of their origins, religion or gender. Special attention should be paid to language in terms of counselling that takes the experiences of migrants into account. Gender neutral language, for instance, includes all people, regardless of their biological sex, ethnicity or identity. Language is thus inclusive rather than discriminatory and exclusionary.

In the German media, as well as in everyday language use, it can happen time and time again that key words used in connection with integration have a discriminatory effect. In their glossary the New German Media Makers explain how to work your way around these terms and what alternatives there are.
