Competence assessment is an all encompassing term for all concepts, forms of interaction and intervention that aim to discover competences, make people aware of their potential and develop them further. A distinction is made between subject-oriented procedures and requirement-oriented procedures. Subject-oriented concepts and perspectives see vocational orientation as a contribution to personality development. In the case of requirement-oriented concepts, the focus is on the requirements of a specific occupational field, for example. Here, the purpose of the procedure is to examine the extent to which the person's competence matches (or deviates from) the requirements. The methods of competence assessment range from personal interviews to the analysis of CVs and work samples. In addition, methods of self-assessment and external assessment are used. Furthermore, action-oriented tasks are used to determine competences. This involves participants organising and completing their own tasks. Pedagogical staff trained in this method systematically observe them according to predefined competence characteristics.
