The Fachhochschulreife is an upper secondary level educational qualification. It entitles the holder to take up studies at a university of applied sciences or polytechnic and at certain universities.
At a technical secondary school (Fachoberschule)
The Fachoberschule leads to the Fachhochschulreife, which is acquired by passing the final examination. The duration is two years, or one year if the duration is shortened. The school-leaving certificate can also be obtained part-time. Pupils can choose between different specialisations or focuses such as technology, health and social work or design.
Prerequisites for the acquisition of the Fachhochschulreife are the Realschulabschluss or an equivalent qualification as well as a work placement, which must be procured independently by the pupil. To obtain the Fachhochschulreife within one year, at least two years of successfully completed vocational training are also required. This may have taken place in a dual or full-time school-based VET programme, but must be assigned to one of the offered specialisations.
